THE INSTRUCTORS

Jump Start Dog Sports

Estelle Robinson

agility instructor

Estelle Robinson is a coach offering motivational methods to train your agility dogs. Recognizing that one method does not work for all dogs, she coaches based on the dog and handler team strengths and needs. Estelle is a two time AKC Invitational winner, multi-time AKC, UKI and USDAA Nationals' finalist, two time European Open USA Team member (in Hungary and Germany), World Agility Open USA Team member (The Netherlands), and finalist in the European Open.

Karen Birdsong

gility instructor
In 1991, Karen began competing in canine agility. Over the years she has competed in five different agility venues: USDAA, NADAC, ASCA, AKC and CPE. She has competed at several national championships hosted by USDAA, NADAC and ASCA. In 2012, Karen and her dog won the ASCA Finals and the ASCA Nationals. In 2012 and 2014, she finished 2nd in her division at the NADAC Championships. In addition, Karen enjoyed approximately 14 years of judging agility for NADAC and ASCA. Karen relishes helping students learn and improve basic agility skills. Her two specialties are in teaching path and distance skills. Regardless of one's preferred venue, a successful a handler needs to clearly communicate the path they want the dog to travel. Path skills are critical whether one is working a dog close or at a distance. Karen follows the philosophy that agility should be first and foremost fun for the dog!

Judy Peterson

instructor & canine good citizen evaluator
Judy Peterson has been an instructor at Jump Start for 17 years. She enjoys teaches a variety of classes including Home Manners, Home Manners 2, and Fun For Fido. She has been a Canine Good Citizen (CGC) Evaluator for the last 10 years, and also teaches a prep class for two of the CGC tests. Judy's goal in teaching is to give owners the skills to teach their dogs to become an enjoyable member of their family. Judy competes with her four dogs in a variety of dog sports including agility, rally obedience, canine nosework, and barn hunt, and has titled numerous dogs in those sports. One of her dogs is a therapy dog and visits assisted living facilities. Judy was recently out for several months on medical leave, and since starting to compete again last September she has had a great time putting 8 new titles on her dogs in 4 months. Judy also works with Cardigan Welsh Corgi Rescue placing Corgis in new homes. She has 3 Chinese Cresteds and a Wire-haired Dachshund.

Patty Wiedeman

cross-discipline instructor
Patty Wiedeman started teaching classes at Jump Start in 2001. She loves to help people strengthen and expand the bond they have with their canine companion. According to Patty, “There’s a connection that travels from you to your dog. That connection gets stronger with every exercise, every training session, and every trick that you do with your dog.” Patty teaches all levels of agility, freestyle dog dancing, and rally freestyle elements. In her classes, she uses positive training methods to bring out the best in each dog. These effective methods create focus and a committed partner eager to learn. Patty is known for her cross-discipline approach and her ability to work with a variety of breeds. “I believe in building a toolbox of behaviors and skills that are useful in a variety of dog sports. The right turn you learn in rally transfers directly to a right turn on an agility course. I also tailor lessons and exercises to do what make sense to your dog, whether it’s a Chihuahua or a Doberman. A little dog has a totally different view point from a large dog. We’ve got to train according to your dog’s view and capabilities while keeping it fun for both dog and handler." Patty competes in multiple dog sports including agility, rally, freestyle, nose work, IABCA, AKC and UKC conformation and lure coursing. She has a MACH21 dog in agility. She was also awarded the Highest Lifetime Achievement Award in agility for the breed. She has been invited to the AKC Agility Invitational every year since it began in 2006. She has been active in Therapy Dog International (TDI) and has received a TDI Outstanding Volunteer Award. Her dogs performed in Kyra Sundance “Best of 101 Dog Tricks” DVD. She enjoys barn hunt, treibball and other new disciplines with her dog.

Kelly McMahon

agility instructor
Kelly McMahon started teaching Agility in 2005 and has been with Jump Start Dog Sports since 2008. She currently teaches 14 group Agility classes, primarily at the Competition Level. Most of her students compete locally in Agility, and some compete at the National Level. A few of her students take her classes “for the fun of it”. "Team McMahon" (Kelly and her dogs) have been competing in Agility at both the Local and National levels for the past 20 years, and have completed Agility Championships in both AKC and USDAA. Additionally, Kelly has put Obedience Utility titles on her Border Collie, “Bingo” and Jack Russell Terrier, “Dixie” - who was the first of her breed to earn an AKC Utility Title (at the tender age of only two years old). Kelly is clearly passionate about both teaching and competing in Agility. Her goal is to ensure each dog has a positive learning experience, such that they can’t tell the difference between “playing” and “training”. Kelly works diligently to encourage lots of laughter and eager learning from her human students during classes, all the while helping each canine/human team to develop their own fun and amazing relationship together!
