Course Description: Puppies are very impressionable through the critical time period of eight to 16 weeks and it is important to introduce them to as many different situations as you can – and still know that your puppy is safe and secure.

In each week’s workshop the puppies will be learning to come to you, to pay attention to you, to walk nicely by your side, to have some self control, and to wait for their food or at a door.

As with all classes, Jump Start Dog Sports does require up to date vaccinations for all dogs. Your puppy must have had at least two sets of DHP and Parvo to join us and you must provide proof of such or your puppy will have to watch from the car window as his friends romp and play.

We will spend some time in each class session on owner education. Each week we will have a different series of topics that include as house training, nutrition and feeding schedules, vaccines and parasites, spaying and neutering, grooming, digging, biting, jumping, and any other questions you may have.

Best of all, there is play time for the puppies where they will be separated into appropriate play groups. You will marvel as they run, chase, play and teach each other the proper etiquette of “playing nice with no biting”.

The whole family is invited to attend Puppy Kindergarten as the more people the puppies see, the better.

Course Description: The more you can get your puppy involved in varied activities at a young age, the better equipped and more confident he will be. Besides building the team relationship between you and your dog, the Puppy Prep School class will introduce your young pup to different surfaces, a variety of sights and sounds, and a lot of “problem solving”.

This is a great class for those who did not attend the Puppy Kindergarten class as well as those who have completed a Puppy Kindergarten elsewhere. As the puppy gets to be about four months, his perception of the world changes a bit. What might not have bothered him a few weeks ago can now become a real challenge – such as loud noises, different people, and older pups. These challenges will become just a part of life as your puppy and you work on fun activities. Different challenges will be presented each week of the series including walking on different surfaces, meeting different people, learning simple obstacles for proper muscle growth, dealing with everyday sights and sounds, and other confidence building activities such as a tunnel, teeter, climbing stairs and balancing activities.

Puppy Prep School will keep the puppies busy the whole hour. You and your puppy will do a lot of interactive play together and lots of team building exercises to help your puppy understand that YOU are the most wonderful thing in his life!

The basics of sit, down, wait and walking on a loose leash as well as coming when called will be included in this class. Upon completion, you may find that your puppy is ready for Home Manners II, Fun 4 Fido or other classes. OR – you many find that Basic Home Manners I is the next appropriate class. Your instructor will help you decide which class is best for you and your puppy.

Course Description:

Using positive reinforcement such as food, praise, and toys we will train you to train your dog to be the responsible house pet that you expect to live with for many years.

In the six weeks of hands on training, with your guidance your dog will learn to:

  • Sit and down wherever you tell him
  • Stay or wait when you tell him
  • Walk on a loose leash as you pass other dogs and people
  • Come when called from where ever he is and whatever he is doing
  • Wait at the door
  • Leave things alone at your command
  • Sit politely when people ask to greet him
  • And generally be a very nice addition to your family.

Some behavior problems may be covered by the instructor. Be sure to ask your questions!

Responsible children over the age of 8 are encouraged to work with their own dogs.

Course Description: The Basic Home Manners II will continue the “basics” learned in Basic Home Manners including sit, down, wait, come and walking on a loose leash. Students will increase the duration of their stays and waits, will practice lots of loose leash walking with some “doodling” to increase attention, will learn to have their dogs give back to them what ever they have picked up (the beginning of fetch for some), and will teach their dog to go “rest”.

Most important is that the class will cover all ten exercises required in the Canine Good Citizen test. Your dog does not need to be registered with AKC to obtain a Canine Good Citizen Certificate. Mixed breeds are always welcomed!

To receive a CGC award, dogs must pass the following items –

  1. Accept a friendly stranger
  2. Sit politely for petting
  3. Appearance and grooming
  4. Walk on a loose leash
  5. Walk through a crowd
  6. Sit and down on command and stay in place
  7. Come when called
  8. Reaction to another (unknown) dog
  9. Reaction to distractions
  10. Supervised separation from its owner

The class will also include games to make the learning of behaviors more fun.

Students are encouraged to take this course as many times as they like as each time and each instructor will add variety and new challenges.
