Kathy Morris and Pat Weymouth founded Jump Start Dog Sports, Inc. in 1996. Their vision was to offer a safe place to train dogs in Orange County. At the same time they were looking for a suitable location for their training facility, Gregg Klepp was in the process of purchasing a boarding kennel (now called Country Care Pet Resort) in Yorba Linda, California. When Gregg decided to offer training at his kennel, he approached Kathy and Pat with the idea of using his facility for their classes.
The property which Greg purchased was located at 4691 Valley View, and encompassed the 10,000 square foot kennel, a two bedroom residence with an attached hobby kennel, a small backyard and a large front yard (10,000 square feet) planted in orange trees. Greg and his wife Sue refurbished the house as their living quarters, and turned part of the hobby kennel into a place for the kennel staff to live.
Kathy agreed to help Gregg with the kennel and worked the front desk, set up a reservation system and cleaned kennel runs. In return, Gregg allowed the use of his backyard for a few training classes. Kathy started with three students in the rental house’s backyard. Very quickly it was realized more space was needed, so Gregg cleared the front yard of orange trees. Kathy had a local swimming pool contractor dump dirt into the front yard. Then Ray, Salvador, Gregg and Kathy leveled the field using a section of chain link fence tied to the back of Gregg’s truck. Sod was laid, fencing installed and Jump Start was born! Kathy and Pat had a large network of dog friends and in 1996, they had about 40 agility students training on site.
In 1997, it became clear that Jump Start Dog Sports was filling a need in the Orange County dog community. They hired their first instructor, Ella Hoselton, one of the most respected agility competitors at that time. From that point on, Pat and Kathy agreed that to be the best training facility, they had to hire the best and highest profile instructors. For the agility classes, each new instructor was hand picked based on Pat and Kathy’s observations of the person at agility trials – how they related to their dog, how they handled the course, and their attitude with fellow competitors. This philosophy has carried through the years, and as such the Instructors at Jump Start Dog Sports are top talent in their respective fields.
In 1999, they realized more space was needed to grow. Gregg then purchased the house and property at 4631 Valley View. He offered to improve the backyard if Jump Start Dog Sports was interested in renting the entire property. The backyard was renovated adding sod and lights, and the house was renovated.
On June 23, 1999, Jump Start Dog Sports was incorporated.
In 2000, Jump Start Dog Sports improved the front orange grove and made it into yet another training area, with lights, grass, fencing and a shade structure. The small-attached garage was made into a retail store, selling toys, treats, collars and leashes. Kathy and Pat greatly expanded the class offering to include everything from Puppy Kindergarten to Advanced Agility and Utility Obedience.
In 2007, Kathy was looking to retire, and sold the business to Addy and Matt Lerner. From there they grew Jump Start Dog Sports to include the Puppy House, which now houses German Shepherd Rescue of Orange County and supported the addition of new classes such as Frisbee, Rally FrEe, Canine Good Citizen training/testing and Flyball.
In 2016, the Lerner’s sold Jump Start Dog Sports to Manuel Gudiño, CPDT, CDBC who has had extensive experience in the conformation and obedience rings in Mexico. Manuel has over 40 years experience working with dogs as a handler, trainer, judge and behavior consultant, now specializes in dealing with canine behavior problems, especially those with reactive and aggressive issues.
