Addressing Your Puppy’s Biting & Chewing Behaviors (Part 1 of 3)

Addressing Your Puppy’s Biting & Chewing Behaviors (Part 1 of 3):

Since puppies will chew on everything including electrical wires, irrigation systems, base boards and computer cables, it is important to keep him in an area where he can do no harm to himself or your belongings. The busier you keep him with other activities, the less likely he will chew up things that are off limits – he will be too tired! Start now to build responsible behaviors.

As your puppy loses his baby teeth, ALL of his adult teeth will start to come in at the same time. He will begin to chew on everything in sight to relieve some of the pain. While he is going through this teething process, give him some toys that will help alleviate the pain. Rope toys, Nylabones®, stuffed Kong® toys, ice cubes, and some toys especially for teething puppies all work well.

What is a stuffed Kong? It is a heavy-duty rubberized toy that can be stuffed with good things like carrots, dog treats, cheerios, cream cheese, peanut butter, bananas and other healthy foods. The puppy will use his jaws, teeth, and tongue to get at all the tasty treats inside. Ice cubes and frozen rope toys on the other hand, just feel good on inflamed gums.
