Canine Good Citizen (CGC)

Age Requirements: Minimum 8 Months

Prerequisite Class: Basic Home Manners at Jump Start

Length of Class: Five weeks

Size of Class: 4-6 dogs

Course Description:

The Canine Good Citizen Program is a two-part program that stresses responsible pet ownership for owners and basic good manners for dogs. It consists of four weeks of instruction/preparation for the required basic skills, and week five the test is given. The ten-step test shows your dog’s ability to perform basic commands and deal with minor distractions.  The class size is small by design, so individual attention can be given on learning each of the test elements.

Your dog does not need to be registered with AKC to obtain a Canine Good Citizen Certificate.  It is open to pure bred and mixed breed dogs. All dogs that pass the 10-step CGC test may receive a certificate from the American Kennel Club.

To receive a CGC award, dogs must pass the following items:

  1. Accept the presence of a friendly stranger
  2. Sit politely for petting
  3. Appearance and grooming
  4. Walk on a loose leash
  5. Walk through a crowd
  6. Sit and down on command and stay in place
  7. Come when called
  8. Reaction to another (unknown) dog
  9. Reaction to distractions
  10. Supervised separation from its owner
